I think you should ask both Marguerite and Don to contribute to an
Aiki Extensions newsletter stylebook. It doesn't have to be exhaustive
project -- the Chronicle's, for example, is basically the
Associated Press stylebook with a few modifications. We could do the
same. I recommend we poll editors for which style book to adopt --
Associated Press (my preference, for purely selfish reasons), Chicago
or some other -- and then discuss what exceptions we will make. For
example:
- Is "aikido," "aiki," "aiki way" in upper case?
- Is a title upper case only when it precedes a name
(eg, "AE Executive Director Brandon WilliamsCraig," but "Brandon
WilliamsCraig, executive director of AE")? If yes, then how do we
handle "sensei," which always follows the name?
- Do we refer to someone as "sensei" only on first referrence, or whenever the name appears? ("Hannah Jiryis Sensei tested for his
sandan with Shuji Maruyama Sensei .... Hannah Sensei runs a thriving dojo in Kfar Yassif, Israel....
Hannah Sensei was able to visit the camp for a day, where he, Rob Sensei and Zahi ....) - What is the plural form of "senseis"? (Both of these sentences appeared in the newsletter: "Ss. Koichi Tohei, Terry Dobson, and Robert Nadeau." and "Welcome to new AE board members, Senseis Kayla Feder and Quentin Cooke!")
- Are foreign words in italics?
- When do we place words in boldface? (eg, "Inspired by MAP co-founder Jamie Zimron Sensei, Rob developed the PeaceCamp Initiative to bring martial arts youth from the Middle East to camp here in the United States." And this one: "The next day I was giving a KiAi Golf lesson.")
- When do we allow use of non-words like "KiAi Golf"?
- Is rank given? ("Frederic Bauvir, a kinesitherapist and aikido yondan and chief instructor at his dojo in Braine l’alleud." )
- Are profiles to be in first person or third person?
- Can a writer refer to him/herself in third person on a by-lined story? Both Don and Jamie did this in the most recent edition.
And so on. A stylebook will always be a thing in progess, but the
sooner we can start on it the better. It will help keep consistency and
clarity as we go to work on the next newsletter.
